Do interactions with your family leave you unheard, dismissed or belittled? Maybe you come away emotionally drained, overwhelmed or like you've been walking on eggshells? Perhaps you feel shame for not fitting into family expectations, or find yourself constantly explaining yourself in an attempt to be understood? You might shut down and go quiet, or become defensive and feel agitated or angry.
You are not alone. Strained, distant or absent family relationships, or family estrangement, affect one in five families in the UK. This can leave you feeling deeply isolated and lonely, confused, bewildered, angry or frustrated. These reactions are a normal response to unmet needs, pushed aside for the sake of 'keeping the peace' or prioritising others' needs.
Perhaps you struggle to be open and honest within your family or personal relationships. You notice that if you share your feelings or opinions, they are either challenged, minimised or shut down. Over time, not being heard or attuned to in your relationships can negatively impact your emotional, mental and in turn, physical well-being. As well as have a ripple effect in your work and daily responsibilities, your personal or romantic relationships.
If this sounds familiar, you are in the right place. Reaching out for support is the first step towards building confidence and self-esteem, creating healthy boundaries and connecting with others based on the real YOU, not just the version of you others expect you to be.
Whether you are ready to heal relationships, understand your patterns, or move forward in a healthier way, I'll provide tailored support that fits your unique journey.
About Me
I’m Lauren Ashton, a BACP Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist and specialist in trauma and difficult relationships in the context of family or personal relationships.
I support people who have experienced trauma, this could be as a result of a single or one off events, or more prolonged trauma from your childhood, a recent life stage, or happening now in the present. Sometimes relationship struggles are connected to painful experiences or patterns from trauma, this can show up as ongoing conflict, emotional distance or a complete breakdown in contact.
In therapy with me, I help you to make sense of these experiences so you are able to identify a path to work towards healing and contentment. With the professional, empathic and non-judgemental support, I walk alongside you at a pace that feels safe. I helping you find clarity, confidence and a deeper understanding of yourself, giving you room to breathe and re-calibrate.
I offer tailored one-to-one counselling shaped around your needs and therapy goals. I also accept client referrals through AXA, Aviva and Bupa private healthcare providers.
I offer tailor-made 1:1 online counselling and psychotherapy shaped around your individual situation, needs and therapy goals.
